I don’t know about you, but I am a huge fan of Rachel Brathen (aka Yoga Girl). I’ve been following her on social media for the past five years. When I found out she was starting a podcast I was beyond excited, and sure enough it is amazing. This past week she discussed her decision to quit sugar, and she asked people to join her, quitting something they believed they were better off without.
Quitting sugar has been super trendy lately, with diets like Whole30. And to be honest, I hate it. I agree, sugar is awful and we should strive to eat less of it, but some of these diets get too extreme. Even so, listening to the podcast, I found myself thinking “I want to do this too!”. So I said okay, I’ll try to quit sugar. The minute I said this I started having sugar cravings that I never even had before. I literally just created a problem for myself by “forbidding” sugar, which is ridiculous.
The point of Rachel quitting sugar wasn’t to hop on a fad diet, it was to give up something that she turns to during stressful times. So I spent some time asking myself, what is something I would actually be better off without? I don’t like adding huge restrictions to my diet, because I LOVE food and cooking. However, one thing I could cut back on is wine. Whenever I have a stressful day at work I always come home and pour myself a huuuge glass of wine. There are just so many better ways that I could deal with stress, like yoga or a walk outside or doing something creative. So for the next 30 days I will be giving up wine during the work week (not altogether, are you insane?! Baby steps here).
Another thing I have found myself doing more of lately is mindless snacking. I’m hungry when I get home from work, so I eat a cookie, some crackers, a piece of chocolate, a handful of chips, whatever is easy and accessible while I’m waiting for dinner to be ready. Or I’ll eat pastries and doughnuts that someone brings into work. I don’t even like these things that much! I want to always be intentional about what I’m eating. So I’m giving up mindless snacking, and most processed foods will go with that.
So, for the next 30 days I’m saying no to mindless snacking and weeknight drinking! Is there anything you want to give up? Let me know! Use the hashtag #30daystoletgo, and help me stay on track too!
